Anonymous #! love

This morning, I received this anonymous email message:

CrunchBang is amazing! I have a netbook with only 1GB of RAM and it zooms along very fast. I appreciate what you have made, and I would be heart broken if this distro were to ever cease. Please keep it up Mr. Newborough!

I guess it is possible that my recent posts about GNOME might have triggered this. So, to be clear, yes, I really like GNOME, but no, I am not about to stop working on CrunchBang. That said, like many other Linux users, I occasionally like to play around with other desktops and distros. I believe that experimentation is a healthy pursuit, it helps to provide ideas and stops the rot from setting in. At the moment, I am mostly experimenting with GNOME, but it will not be long until I return to using Openbox.

P.S. Maybe now is not a good time to mention my little foray into the world of Windows 8?

    I for one would enjoy your thoughts on Windows 8….

    @BoredOOMM, there is not too much to say. A few months ago, I downloaded and installed one of the Windows 8 preview images. I really only did it to see what all the fuss was about. I quite liked the visuals of the metro interface and it performed much better than I thought it would; however, I just could not escape the feeling that underneath the polish, it was the same old Windows.

    I run Windows 7 as a host, but have VMware Workstation with 2 other OS’s at any time full screened across 3 monitors. One of them right now is running Windows 8 with a multi-touch screen. Although I do find some of the interface appealing, I find working with the touch interface tedious over time. I’m not sure how well it will be adopted by consumers.

    I’m on a quest to find my next linux distro. I guess I go through this once every 6 months as I grow tired of certain pain points. In the past 15 years, I’ve gone from FreeBSD->Solaris->SuSE->Ubuntu->Mint->ArchLinux->SuSE, and now giving Crunch a fair shake. I’ve probably tried every distro on distrowatch at some point or another.

    Anyway, thanks for your work on Crunch#! - OpenBox deserves more respect in the wild.

    @Telegardian, I can fully understand:

    Although I do find some of the interface appealing, I find working with the touch interface tedious over time.

    Initially, I was quite impressed with it, the clean design and the speed were both attractive qualities, but as you say, they soon grow tiresome. I found myself bending to accommodate the system, which is kind of twisted.

    I’ve seen a lot of pictures and heard a lot about the new Windows 8. But I must admit, its to much and feels to stupifying to me - all the big buttons and icons.

    Have been using Windows Vista and later 7 since they came out, but after a quick search and go at the #! I was hooked. The OpenBox system is so light, fast and just a joy to use. So far though, I must admit that I’m only using it on my secondary machine as it almost permanently destroyed my Windows partition on the other, when trying to make a dual-boot configuration. I’ll have to wait until I have some money to spend, and then buy a new harddrive for my primary computer -so I don’t mess with my current system. I would very much like to ONLY use #! in the future, as it seems that you have hit the spot and made a distro just the way I wished for, but never had the talent or know-how to make myself.

    Thumbs up!

    I use Windows 8 Pro on my HTPC. It just fits well as a living-room OS, and works so well with my wireless keyboard. Though, I use Crunchbang on my Dell Latitude D500, I’m loving it. It originally came with Windows XP Pro, but was very sluggish, and so was everything else. Crunchbang flys on it. I’m currently using Windows 7 Home Prem on my home-office PC, but I’m thinking of switching to Crunchbang on that as well. I’m mainly worried about printer drivers.

    @Harley, it is definitely worth double checking your printer’s compatibility, before performing the install. If you find that it is not supported, CrunchBang runs pretty well in a virtual machine — I use it in a vm at work ;)

    I have spent the last couple of years installing and experimenting with many different linux distros and variants. From Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and Mint and so on. Gnome, KDE, Enlightenment, andUnity, you name it, and my dell mini 10v has sampled the taste. Ubuntu was my first love because of the easy and somewhat foolproof installation. I liked Unity but my mini couldn’t handle it. I drifted around and tinkered and learned a little bit in the process. But installation and driver issues with the more popular distros, along with noobie questions and cluttered forums, kept me lookin for the “ONE”. I’ve been with #! for about a month now. This is by far the easiest and most snag-free of all I have experienced to date! I have learned so much more in such a short time from the #!forums and community. This is the”ONE” I’ve been looking for, thanks to you and all #!’ers. Thanks a million times over!

    Yes, #! is teh awesome. I am migrating the crunchiness over to Gen, too… I like the “do whatever the f* you want” licenses. Nice code (those f* this and #! that are very readable). I like Debbie, but her apathay doesn’t feed me as much as my portage.
